Sunville Rail announces Carbon reduction targets for 2024

Sunville Rail Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2035.

We have measured our baseline carbon footprint and outlines steps to be taken in to work towards hitting our net zero emission targets.

The management of environmental issues and the impacts that they present shall be considered from the outset of all contracts and an assessment from the contract

information provided by our clients SVR shall evaluate the aspects of our activities and identify the control measures to minimise the impact including emissions to air, pollution to water courses, noise, climate change, use of fossil fuels etc.

All SVR Site Managers/Team Leaders are consulted in the production of site documents and initial site deployment and are considered an essential part of being aware of the potential impacts of the contract and the control measures that are to be implemented.

From the induction stage all employees, visitors subcontractors shall be made aware of the SVR environmental policy and the potential impacts and control measures relating to the works in order to ensure net zero targets are set out and achieved across the whole business.

Baseline Emissions Footprint Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.

Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2024

Baseline has been created for 2024 to set environment carbon reduction plan with move to achieving net zero by 2035 for all business operations.

Baseline year emissions:

EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)

Scope 1 51428

Scope 2 3890

Scope 3 (Included Sources) 165900

Total Emissions 221200

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following

carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 110600 tCO2e by 2030. This is a reduction of 50% Carbon Reduction Projects Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives.

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2024 baseline.

SVR have PIEMA trained member of senior management and have identified the minimum competencies required throughout the company in relation to the environmental responsibilities of the business. SVR are totally committed to ensuring that all employees and its supply chain hold the relevant competencies in relation to ensuring the delivery of our works comply with both legal &statutory and client requirements.

SVR are also FORS bronze accredited so we have in place fuel and emissions champion to monitor consumption, and with the price of fuel fluctuation and margins squeezed improving fuel efficiency is more important than ever with the added benefit of also reducing emission and environmental impact.

All suppliers are vetted dependant on the level of environment risk they may bring to the workplace and for high level risk a formal audit may be required by our HSQE personnel within the business. This audit shall be based on the principles of BS EN 14001 :2015.

SVR where possible have embedded a circular economy principles and pay special attention to the purchase of works, goods or services that seek to contribute to the closed energy and material loops within supply chains, whilst minimising, and in the best case avoiding, negative environmental impacts and waste creation across the whole life-cycle.’

Where possible we also look to reuse leftover materials onto other projects where possible, and any materials that can’t be reused we look to recycle, one recent initiative we have employed as part of circular economy is all our old delivery pallets have been recycled or repurposed by a pallet reuse company we also have suppliers for the sale and reuse of all scrap metal used across our projects.

SVR have invested significant resource in the delivery of its works, the include the procurement of hybrid vehicles and newer more up to date vehicles in 2024 that offer euro compliance engines and are able to operate in Ultra-low emission zones.

Through our Fleetcheck software app Sunville Rail is able to monitor vehicle/fuel usage and provide carbon footprint certificates for each vehicle, Sunville also uses this information to monitor older vehicles which now due to age and deterioration have a higher carbon footprint or economically unviable and look to replace existing vehicle with newer more environmentally friendly vehicles with a continued push toward Hybrid and electric vehicles.

The business monitors the use of all vehicles, fuel, emissions and plans the workforce to endeavour to use the best available techniques to ensure the minimum impacts on the environment.

SVR deploys a Tele-gence tracking app which can monitor movements of all vehicles and also scores drivers on their driving performance to determine drivers who are taking efficient journeys.

This year we have also installed a new 7KW QUB EV smart charger at our Gatwick Metro Centre office in preparation of future switch to Hybrid EV vans and full electric vehicles as recent technological gains in battery capacity, charging times and life span are making a switch over to electric vehicles more viable to the business as on option.

As part of the Telent Green solutions programme Sunville Rail have actively set about undertaking an initiative to continually seek to identify the new suite of electrically powered plant that is becoming available to the market place. The company have committed to ensuring that the reduction in the use of fossil fuel vehicles and the use of electrically powered vehicles must increase by 50% of the next twelve months. This will ensure that less CO2 is produced alongside noise pollution to local communities where Sunville Rails works can take place. Also as part of the vehicular review it is now policy that the maximum length of time a vehicle is owned and operated by the business is the maximum of 6 years.

Furthermore a recent stand down day was organised by the company for operatives to come to the head office and review the new electrically powered plant available from Hilti. Hilti are an EcoVadis Gold company who driving low carbon footprint solutions who have implemented a circular model of tools where at least 75% of extracted materials are able to be re-used and recycled.

Over the past year Sunville Rail has sought to switch from generator powered plant to battery powered. This reduces the use of fuel on site and Batteries can be powered from renewable sources of electricity. The stand down day, Slides are contained in the supplementary information, was undertaken on the 10th April 2024 and showcased the new range of Hilti equipment that utilises the most recent innovations in battery technology to enable the equipment to have sufficient power and for the time periods required when working on site.

Hilti offer a 1-platform battery solution which works across all tools with a range of battery powers 4v up to the new 22v Nuron batteries which having used recently on the DLR network for a CRMS project worked just as effectively as fuel alternative tools and cut out emissions whilst working in a tunnel environment.

Sunville has also recently installed a new smart meter at our Gatwick Metro centre office to monitor usage and spend on electricity at the unit, and with our implemented office energy usage plan we have managed to keep our consumption and energy bills to are relatively low level.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

SVR have invested in updated and hybrid vehicles and are targeting to have 100% of its vehicles by the end of 2024, with and eventual move over to have all vans hybrid/EV charged within the forthcoming years.

Also As part of SVRs environmental objectives over the next 12 months is the installation on solar panels on the building at Gatwick Metro centre.
